Believe in Yourself – Sydney, Australia – Jay Daley
“And now for something completely different” – Monty Python
If someone builds a better mousetrap, then you need to find better mice. Jay not only finds one, but photographs it as well. I love the title “Believe in Yourself”. It sure fits the image and helps remind us no matter what the odds, we always have a chance to be great. We had been going through a pretty rainy start to the winter in Sydney and I was feeling very creatively bored with my photography and was trying to think of something new to photograph. With this shot I wanted to try and portray a feeling of ‘speed’ and therefore had the idea of photographing a mouse running past the camera with a trap snapping off behind him (obviously I didn’t want my pet mouse near a loaded mouse trap so I shot the two separately). As it turns out convincing a mouse to run in a straight line past a camera isn’t an easy to task but they do seem to enjoy jumping from tissue boxes. That made the shot, a pile of some cut up cheese a tissue box and jump happy mouse then in the same composition (on top of a piece of wood on the floor of my living room I shot the mouse trap and simply painted it into the frame in Photoshop).
