Romantic Night – Alberta, Canada – Paul Lavoie
We really enjoy light painting and this is one of the most creative that we have seen in a long time. The process is basically when you keep the shutter open and move a bright light source through the image. Sometimes the photographer traces an object while other times they actually create objects in the photo such as the light people in this image. This cool shot is actually one exposure which makes it even more difficult. Over in the column to the right we have a Trick Photography book that will show you exactly how to do it.

This image was taken near Peace River, Alberta, Canada in mid-August. My wife and I set out to play around with some light painting as we had done a few times in the past. When we saw how amazing the stars were that night we quickly realized that we had to do something that would incorporate them in the image. So using the bench and after many attempts to get the ” Stick couple” correct we finally got our image.
I was using my Canon 5dMarkII with a Tokina 16-28 f2.8 lens. I had the camera set on bulb mode @ f2.8. At ISO 2000. Using a hand held remote for the shutter. This picture is solely composed of one exposure. Once I had worked out the proper exposure for the stars it was time to start painting. Using 2 small LED flashlights I would begin by quickly painting the bench. After that my wife would jump into the scene and start painting the “Stick Couple” which proved to be a little more difficult than we were expecting. Finally getting it right then realizing that we forgot the legs for example. Once she was done painting I allowed the shutter to stay open another 25-30 seconds to allow for the stars to nicely imprint.
I am a amateur photographer from Peace River, Alberta who has been taking pictures for about 4 years now. I am fascinated with the idea of being able to capture moving light, to be able to create something that is truly unique and allows us to open our imaginations. Once again I would like to express my thanks to all those who have given me such positive feedback. It is very encouraging thanks you.
